What kind of site is this exactly?

I am a college student pursuing a degree and eventual career in journalism or writing. I have not published any works, and I am not actively involved in preparing a short story or work for publication. Would this site still be of use to me? I am interested in sharing thoughts and writing ideas with other people who share this similar passion. Thank you for your time.

Read the articles and diaries, and if they're useful to you, or suggest something you'd like to comment on, welcome! If not, well, perhaps there's something else out there on the big wide internet that'd be more up your alley.

We tend to talk about technique here. Some of us write fiction, others creative nonfiction or just ordinary nonfiction (which is not to say it's not creative...). So settle in, and welcome.

Though much of the content here is geared towards fiction writers, I think the tips and techniques discussed here are valuable to writers from all camps.

When I first came here, I was working on a novel (now under three inches of dust) and wrote mostly essays and editorial pieces. But for the past year or so I've been focusing on what I consider my "true path" as a writer -- poetry -- and though I don't post here very often any more, I do check in and read because of the insight and inspiration I find here.

Sorry. I have a few sonnets under my belt, as well.

Of course, most writing sites will be of use to you in your pursuit of further writing. However, as you shape your life as a writer or journo then you will also find areas of greater or lesser interest which goes without saying.
First off the rank, ALWAYS FOCUS ON the primary text, the first source, not other peoples writing/sites.
