Well what do you know

It seems I have a job - signed the contract Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately, I promptly caught a nasty cold that's been going around, and spent the past two days either in bed sleeping or on the couch wrapped in a blanket reading. I didn't have enough energy or mental focus to do much more than that.

So I get to be the engineer on-site taking care of a water treatment plant, teamed with one of the guys who helped build it. Not bad for a first job after graduating! He knows the plant, I know how to deal with chemical processes; it should be a good mix.

Of course, this is a fairly remote place. And by remote I don't mean near a small (or even tiny) town. I mean there is only the camp, and you get there by plane.

Fortunately the company flies me there and flies me home. Unfortunately, there are 20 (satellite) phone lines for 400 people. I suspect the internet is out of the question while I'm there.

I was going to go in to their main office in town and learn a bit about their nifty super-secret process that's used to clean the water in the plant I'll be working at, but the cold got in the way. I just hope I've kicked it and I'm not all stuffed up when I get on the plane Monday morning...

What does this mean for the site? Well, mainly that I won't be commenting for a few weeks at a stretch, and if any more comment spammers do a drive-by spamming I won't be there to delete them right away. (Every few weeks we get a run of a couple of dozen identical spam comments, which I delete immediately.) My other half has agreed to watch the site and make sure it stays running, and delete comment spam as needed. I'll try to make up for my absences by posting more when I am around though :-)

Congratulations! An actual job, in your field even.

If only it weren't quite so far afield...

Enjoy, and we'll see you when we see you.

Namely, in my field, the jobs are where the resources are, and in this case the resource (nickel) is in northern quebec.

At least I won't be expected to live there and take vacation days to see my other half. If that had been the case I don't think I'd have taken the job.

I don't really have much extra space in my luggage :-)

(posted from dialup in my hotel room 1/2 mile from the mexico border - I can see the fence...)
