The Tianamen square still resounds. The military doctor who blew the Sars whistle in China last year is missing, he sent a letter where he asked the communist party to admit failure 15 years ago.
Amnesty reports that people who were involved with the Tianamen square revolt are still being arrested and persecuted. About 50 persons has been continously in jail since that day, without any form of fair trial, and several people are living outside China and are denied entry to their homeland.
For me the uprising is very special, because I'm not old enough to remember any similar situations (like the 1968 Czechoslovakian revolution), and the Polish Solidarinoche movement were by a much more rugged band of strikers and the Polish leaders didn't dare use the military in the same way.
China is still under an embargo which were put into effect in 1989. Though many western governments would rather let China do as it pleases and not critisize them because their vast market is so valuable they'd rather just do business with them.
The US has complained to the UN about the human rights abuses in China, though, IIRC, China is a permanent member of the security council, so they'll just use the time honored practice of vetoing anything which they don't like. Incidentally the US has used their veto powers more often than any other security council member since the break up of the Soviet Union, mostly over Israeli/Palestinian resolutions, obviously human rights abuses aren't just as important when done by the Israeli...but that's another debate.
Remembering the hundreds who died that night must be seen as a symbol of all the millions who've suffered in China under political oppression the last 100 years, not only by the communists, but the warlords, the Japanese, etc. Today there are over (1.3?) a billion Chinese living under a system which takes the worst from two cultures, the political oppression of the communism and the free market with few or poor controls. Several thousands of Chinese dies every year because of knock off consumables which at best are not working (rabies "vaccine" made of salt water) or are poisonous (technical spirits instead of alcohol).
