I can heartily recommend Ennio Morricone as background music for writing. Hmm, well, actually not, I often find I'm listening too closely to the beautiful melodies (for example "Good Luck, Jack"/"Buena Fortuna Jack", "Moscow Farewell"/"Adios, Moscú").

Ambient, New Age and other non-intrusive elevator music might work better.

I have the same problem - if the music is interesting, I listen to the music instead of writing. If the music is uninteresting, well, I wouldn't have it in my collection :-)

I generally prefer it quiet when I'm working. Luckily I live in a neighbourhood where that's possible...
